Matthew Johnson Sifu has been involved in martial arts since age ten. He has studied Tae Kwon Do, Hapkido, and Jeet Kune Do, as well as the art of the Japanese sword Ken-Jitsu. His pursuit of ving tsun kung fu began in 1990. His studies have taken him around the world to Hong Kong and the Ving Tsun Athletic Association, where he learned ving tsun kung fu under Grandmaster Ip Ching. Under the guidance of Grandmaster Ip Ching, Matthew Johnson is a lifetime member and board-certified kung fu instructor of the reknowned Ving Tsun Athletic Association (VTAA) in Hong Kong.

Matthew Johnson Sifu has taught privately for several years, and currently teaches ving tsun kung fu at Purdue University/Calumet in Hammond, Indiana. In 2007, Sifu Johnson founded the Ving Tsun Self Defense Academy (VTSDA) in order to teach and preserve Ip Ching Sigung's kung fu for future generations. He has dedicated is life to teaching the art directly and purely, just has he continues to learn it from Grandmaster Ip Ching.
