There may be as many reasons to study martial arts as there are people on this planet, And while it may surprise you, the truth is that most of them have nothing to do with fighting. Of course, we do train to fight here at the VTSDA. But underlying our training is something deeper than fighting, or mere self defense. It is something that reaches beyond the individual accomplishment of any single Ving Tsun fighter.
Here at the VTSDA, we maintain the sense of being part of something greater, the sense that our training in Ving Tsun kung fu is not only about fighting but about the refinement of our inner-most selves. Through the practice of Ving Tsun, we seek to forge our spirits and minds, to cultivate wisdom. While we do train to use the destructive power of our kung fu against our opponents, we also realize their frailty, their humanity, & their suffering. In that realization we see that even in a fight, we ought to do what is appropriate to survive; nothing more. We do not hit or kick seeking vengeance. We seek only to end the battle as quickly and as humanely as possible.
Learning Ving Tsun brings with it the responsibility of using it with discretion and sense, the awareness that each of us is subject to a complex of conditions beyond what we can easily know, and that binds us to an obligation to defend ourselves when necessary but with a conscience. We fight with an open heart not an angry one.
